Smithsonite, also known as Zinc Spar, is a captivating zinc carbonate mineral that exhibits a range of colours, including yellow, brown, purple, white, green, grey, and most notably, its turquoise-blue shade. Although it’s rare to find Smithsonite in its crystallized form, when it does occur, it takes on a rhombohedral shape. This mineral was often mistaken for Hemimorphite or Calamine until it was differentiated by F.S. Beaudant in 1832. Interestingly, it was named after the English mineralogist James Smithson, who also happened to be the founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution.
